Claiming a victory for the DUP, MP David Simpson congratulated DUP councillors ‘on their success in getting £44,500 channelled into the community before the finish of Craigavon Borough Council’.

Mr Simpson said: “As a group they recognised that blowing this money on events that would massage Councillors egos was totally unacceptable and put forward a proposal that a grant process be opened to allow organisations be it community, church and sporting the opportunity to apply for up to £1,000 to host events held in the month of March that would celebrate the worth and work of Craigavon Council over the years.

“As a very proud former Mayor of the Borough I for one believe there is much to celebrate. We have witnessed economic growth, the Council has tackled unemployment, we have consistently kept the rates low and therefore it is important to ensure that a legacy is left for future generations. This is a good news story for Council and one that we as a party were proud to lead on. I would commend my Council team on their efforts and once again this shows real delivery for the rate payers of the Borough.”

Cllr Carla Lockhart the DUP group leader on Council said, “We are delighted at the outcome of our proposal. We as a party felt it was important to invest in our community and ensure that local groups could apply to Council for this pot of money set aside to celebrate the life of Craigavon Council and the investment it has made in communities over the years. I am delighted that over 90 groups will benefit from the fund and know that we as Councillors have busy month ahead with all the events planned.”
