The 324th anniversary of the historic landing was re-enacted at the waterfront with “increased pageantry” including a return to mounted duty for the royal visitor (see pics on pages 30 & 31).

In recent years, the king has walked alongside his trusty steed, however at the weekend he was clearly visibly to the delight of the crowds who gathered to greet his arrival at the harbour shortly after lunch-time.The programme organised by Carrick Council in partnership with District Loyal Orange Lodge No.19 also included family entertainment at Castle Green, while Lagan Valley Orange Historical Society hosted an exhibition in the Town Hall.

Past District Master, Councillor Jim McClurg said: “It was a cracking day, a big crowd, tremendous. There were lodges from Scotland and Liverpool and juniors from Liverpool who took part in the pageant. We are hoping to build on the success next year.”

Meanwhile, the PSNI seized in excess of 70 items of alcohol following the pageant. It was, police added, seized as a result of 14 interventions.
