Cash for ‘Culture’ arts projects

Ilex, the urban regeneration company for Derry~Londonderry has helped Eden Place Arts Centre improve facilities in the Pilot’s Row Community Centre and purchase digital equipment.

The centre, which was awarded £39,248 under the City of Culture Capital Fund, plans to run exhibitions, workshops and craft fun days throughout the year with term time courses also available. Activities will cover all ages and a number of Digital Media projects will target participants from Westland Ward, the Brandywell, Creggan and Diamond areas.

Ilex’s Cultural Broker Caoimhin Corrigan said: “This project will support people of all ages and abilities to train in using digital equipment to improve their lives alongside their employability and stay connected with family and friends. The programme of courses and events arising from this project is both innovative and exciting and will greatly benefit the community. These types of projects will be a fitting legacy to City of Culture, benefiting communities and continuing to enhance our cultural offering throughout 2013 and beyond.”

Pilot’s Row Community Centre Arts Centre Co-ordinator Judi Logue said: “This funding has given our arts centre and gallery a great facelift enabling us to buy much-needed new equipment affording this community new opportunities in digital media. We have already put this equipment to good use with our over 55s and our youth groups from the Triax area allowing people to embrace modern technology. Within our courses many participants are learning new skills and our community will continue to reap the benefits of this for many years to come.”

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland added: “My Department’s investment in digital equipment will provide improved facilities for the existing users of the Arts Centre and will allow a range of external organisations and cultural practitioners to make use of the facility to host their activities at the premises”.
