Cash injection for Dunclug's youth

SUMMERTIME just got a whole lot better for young people in the Dunclug estate.

Social Development Minister Alex Attwood last week announced 12,000 worth of funding for a summer programme for the youth in Dunclug.

The Summer programme includes group based work, outdoor pursuits and day trips for up to one hundred young people aged from five to 17. It is being managed by the North Eastern Education and Library Board (NEELB) Youth Service.

Alex Attwood said: "This funding is good news for young people in the Dunclug Estate. Alongside making this financial help available, I want to promote the values of self reliance and social responsibility, values that can be achieved through participation. This scheme can help in these objectives.

"I would encourage the young people of Dunclug to take advantage of opportunities such as this."

The funding also includes training opportunities for adults who volunteer with the Dunclug Youth Forum which supervises the activities and events during the summer programme.

Volunteers get the opportunity to either complete certificates in Youth Work or an Adult Trainee Leaders Course with training being delivered by the NEELB Youth Service.

Training in Sports Leaders Proficiency is also available.
