Mr Kennedy was responding to a question from Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone, who said funding for the major road scheme must be prioritised.

“I welcome the commitment from the Regional Development Minister to progressing the A6 Randalstown to Castledawson dual carriageway scheme to be “shovel ready” in 2015,” said the SDLP assembly member.

“However, at present that commitment amounts to seeking expressions of interest from contractors who wish to be considered to tender for construction of the project.

“Funding has not yet been secured, and the A6 dualling scheme will be forced to compete against other capital projects for any available funding in 2015 and beyond.

“The Minister must go further and not only commit to making the A6 dualling scheme “shovel-ready” in 2015, but commit to prioritising the funding of this important infrastructure project.”

He said the delivery of funding would end “the uncertainty about the future of the A6 dualling project, which is affecting local businesses and road users” and pledged to continue to lobby the Minister on the scheme.
