Castleroe and Ballyhackett pupils sample 'animal magic'

CASTLEROE and Ballyhackett Primary Schools enjoyed an educational and fun day out to Jollyes' Pet Shop and Knocknaboy Veterinary Clinic last Thursday.

This trip was funded through Primary Integrating Enriching Education - a three year project funded by the International Fund for Ireland and the Atlantic Philanthropies.

The project aims to support small schools from different sectors, located in close geographical proximity to work together to enhance good community relationships between staff, pupils, parents and the wider communities they serve.

P1 and P2 pupils were given a very informative talk in Jollyes’ Pet Shop and were allowed the opportunity to handle various types of pets. They asked questions and were each given a bag of goodies to take home.

At Knockanboy Veterinary Clinic the children saw the examination and operating rooms and were told about the various types of equipment which a vet uses to treat sick animals.

They were given the opportunity to visit dogs which were recovering from illnesses and operations.

The vet, Julia Frissel, then allowed her own dog to do tricks such as sit, heel and wait.

The children thoroughly enjoyed their trip and the two venues provided them with first-hand experiences which reinforce what they have been learning about in school.

The children returned to Castleroe Primary School where they had lunch together and were able to have fun in the playground and build new friendships. They ended the day by celebrating ‘World Book Day’ through stories and activities related to pets and vets.
