Cathedral Youth Club wins prestigious justice award

Cathedral Youth Club, from The Fountain, in Londonderry have received a special recognition award from the Youth Justice Agency for going beyond what was expected of them in supporting young people through reparation.

The award was presented to Graham Warke from Cathedral Youth Club during a reception held in the Agency’s Foyle Area Office on Friday to acknowledge the valuable work undertaken by partner organisations in supporting young people through the provision of reparation placements.

Guests heard at first hand the experiences of some of those involved in reparation – from a young person’s perspective, a victim’s perspective, a community perspective and an Agency perspective – and examples of reparation work and activities were also on display.

Reparation work encourages young people to make genuine efforts to make amends for their offending behaviour while also helping to restore broken relationships within the community. This is done by encouraging and supporting young people to undertake reparative activities as part of their statutory orders. Cathedral Youth Club, received a special recognition award for going beyond what was expected of them in supporting young people through reparation, while Eglinton Community Centre and Shantallow Residents Association were commended for having been short-listed. A further 27 partner organisations were presented with certificates to acknowledge the support they provide to young people.

Colleen Heaney, Assistant Director of the Agency’s Foyle Area Office paid tribute to all providers “for their support and commitment in working with our young people throughout the year”.

We are extremely grateful for your assistance.”
