At an award ceremony recently in Malone Golf Club Catherine was pronounced the worthy runner-up in this competition, held to mark International Women’s Day.

Rotary clubs across Ireland were encouraged to seek nominations from their community in recognition of the achievements of women within the district and the vital role they play in the community.

Rotary Club President, Helen McDonnell, described Catherine as a community activist who had worked tirelessly for her community for over 20 years, saying: “Her no-nonsense, getting stuck in attitude is part of who she is and what makes her our unsung heroine. We are delighted that she has been recognised for her unfailing commitment to our city.”

Helen and Catherine travelled to the awards ceremony where they met Rotarians from across the Province to celebrate women who make a difference.

Catherine is a member of the organising committee for the annual Women of the Year awards in Londonderry, which recognises women in the community. Whereas she is always looking to acknowledge and focus on others and the work they do she herself is extremely modest in what huge impact she has made.

“Sometimes people’s commitment and dedication can be taken for granted and go unrecognised, perhaps the way they might want it, but that should not stop us from taking time out to appreciate them and the amazing contribution they have made,” said Helen.

Rotary is a service organisation open to women and men of all ages who are business, professional or community leaders and who want to use their skills and experience for the benefit of others both locally and internationally.
