Catherine wins ‘Make Art Not Waste’ contest

DALRIADA School pupil Catherine Torrens has won the second annual RiverRidge Recycling ‘Make Art Not Waste’ competition in the Ballymoney Borough council area which took place this week.

Catherine created the winning piece of art, Tea Party, from glass, plastic sponge, card and wood and was selected by the panel of judges as the most inspiring piece of work to be created from recycled objects.

Catherine, said, “The purpose of my art work was to explain that waste can be a resource. I have taken some rubbish that may have one day been put in landfill and made it into something beautiful. I also wanted to get across a message. Waste will soon start affecting our everyday lives. Everything from work to tea parties. Unless we start to recycle and stop waste we will have a poorer quality of life. When you drink tea with your friends you are in a sort of community and we must stand up as a community and say that waste is a resource.”

Ballymoney District Council Recycling Officer Declan Donnelly who helped judge the competition said, “It’s great to see young students get involved and in doing so learn how valuable waste is as a resource. The works of art show great promise and I’m pleased that our next generation is engaging in this matter and it was a pleasure for me to judge them.”

Dalriada School has received £500 from RiverRidge Recycling and Catherine has won £70 for herself and her artwork will be forwarded to the regional final where she is in with a chance of winning an iPad.

She will also be automatically entered into the Sustainable Ireland Awards 2013 – Most Inspiring Environmental Project by a Young Person, which will be held in September 2013.
