Catholic girls' schools are most appealing

A CATHOLIC girls' schools in Londonderry registered the second highest number of appeals for admission of any post-primary school in Northern Ireland this year.

There were 14 appeals for admission to St Mary's College. Only St Paul's High School in Bessbrook registered a higher number with 23.

A second Catholic girls' school St Cecilia's College recorded an equally high number of appeals with 13.

The number of appeals to get into these two schools together outweighed the total number of appeals to get into Foyle and Londonderry College, Oakgrove Integrated College, Thornhill College, Lumen Christi College, St Columb's Grammar and Strabane Grammar combined.

There were less than five appeals to get into each of these schools.

There were no appeals registered to get into Lisneal College.

Across the Western Education and Library Board (WELB) there was a total of 72 appeals to get into post-primary schools this year.

Education Minister Caitrona Ruane released the information in a written response to a Stormont question last week.
