The court heard police on mobile patrol in Ulster Street saw the defendant on a scooter. He was travelling at twice the speed limit in North Street and other vehicles had to brake to avoid a collision.

Police tried to stop him and he was eventually caught when he fell off the vehicle at Allenhill Park.

A barrister said the owner of the vehicle was a friend of the defendant who noticed that the keys had been left in the scooter.

He took it for a short drive and didn’t notice the police behind him, she added.

District Judge, Mr Alan White, said it was an atrocious piece of driving.
