LISBURN is to host a celebration of the best sports, food, arts and crafts that minority communities have brought to the city at a unique event this weekend.

'Celebrate Diversity' will take place at the Grove Activity Centre in Knockmore on Saturday with support from Lisburn City Council, South Eastern Health Trust and the local Neighbourhood Policing Team.

This will be supported by statutory and community groups who will have stands with information and advice.

The one day extravaganza is open to everyone and there is no cost. It is sponsored by PSNI Policing with Community, LCC Sports Development, Safer Lisburn and Lisburn DPP.

Community Safety Sergeant Joann Gibson said: "The involvement of so many partner agencies across the Greater Lisburn area highlights the importance of community relations with minority groups.

"Lisburn City is an extremely safe place to live, with recorded crime continuing to fall due to the hard work of Community Safety partnerships and the local community. Crime throughout the District has fallen by over 14%, with theft and criminal damage experiencing drastically reduced figures.

"Diversity Day celebrates cultural differences through sport, food and other activities, helping to break down any barriers that may exist. The local Neighbourhood Policing Team will be present on the day to introduce ourselves and talk to members of the community who might have felt alienated in the past. It is the responsibility of everyone in the local community to continue to make Lisburn one of Northern Ireland's most diverse, safest and welcoming places to live."

Nisha Tandon, Head of ArtsEkta added: "The event is a fusion of Indian, Sri Lankan, Chinese, Mexican, Polish and Ulster Scots culture, coming from the heart of the community. I have been delighted by the welcome the event has received from the people of Lisburn. This sends out an extremely positive message to the rest of Northern Ireland."
