Celebrating 'Causeway Kids'

COLERAINE Borough Council hosted the 'Causeway Kids Cuisine' Awards last week at Cloonavin.

The event celebrated the efforts and achievements of businesses in the Borough who have adopted a healthier approach.

Causeway Kids Cuisine, a nutritional project supported by the Foods Standards Authority, was the first of its kind in Northern Ireland.

It encouraged 24 restaurants, cafes and eateries across Coleraine to make healthy changes to their children's menus in order to promote health and well being to families.

The third prize winners of the scheme for making significant healthier changes to their breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, including replacing fizzy drinks with water, milk and fruit cordials was the Silver Sands Restaurant, Portrush.

The restaurant that came second was Arbutus in Kilrea. They added healthy starters such as home made soup and melon to their menu and included grilled chicken salads, grilled sausages and vegetable pasta dishes to their main children's menu. They modified their cooking methods to include baking and grilling. They also included meal deals with healthy side orders, and replaced fizzy drinks with water, milk and low sugar squashes. Fruit salad, sorbet and ice-lollies were provided as desserts.The winner was Caf M and the Gallery Restaurant at Moores, Coleraine for their enthusiastic and innovative approach to the Causeway Kids Cuisine initiative. They introduced healthy meal deals including soup and potato, Irish stew and low fat grilled sausages, as well as healthier drinks and desserts.

They provided a loyalty card scheme to support a healthy eating club, were upon ordering five healthy meal deals, the next meal was complimentary. They also ran competitions at Teddy Mountain for healthy children to win teddy bears, and promoted the Causeway Kid Cuisine theme throughout their store.
