Celebration for kickboxing club

THE Mid Ulster Boxing and Kickboxing Club celebrated their first aniversary recently.

Starting out they were unsure of what the future might hold but full of expectation. This was fulfilled in many ways. Membership rapidly increased and suddenly the club moved from strength to strength winning many titles along the way.

One of the most prestigious came with Lurgan fighter Nigel Parks winning the first of these. Here’s a man who is touted in the sport as being “The Real Deal.”

Alan Campbell, himself from the town and a great lover of all things Lurgan said: “From the moment our doors opened it all seemed to happen for us. Nobody could have predicted how popular the gym was to become.”

Alan added. “I just know there are some very exciting times ahead.”

Some six months in they decided to open their doors to allow female membership and the response was overwhelming. In the short space of time up to the present several girls are now training and will participate in a full contact show later in the year to be held in Dublin.

Alan feels secure in the knowledge that the fighters and Trainers have taken their fitness and expertise to a new level. Here the emphasis is on a mixture of old time boxing training complimented by modern training techniques involving spin classes and high altitude training.

Plans are afoot to expand the gym facilities by opening up another club in the Lurgan area to cater mainly for juniors.

The club’s committee would like to thank everyone who helped put them on their present course. In particular they would single out Lurgan fighter and Top Coach/Trainer Davy Boyd for all his advice and assistance. All members of the WKA and with a special mention to Ashley McClean.

Anyone interested in joining is asked to contact the gym in person or email at [email protected]. Alternatively telephone 07730 926 031 or 07833 666 4070.
