Centenarian receives a signed illustrated copy of St Luke’s Gospel

To mark her 100th birthday, on Tuesday last leaders of the four main churches in the city presented a signed commemorative copy of St Luke’s Gospel to Londonderry woman Elizabeth McLaughlin. She received the last copy of the Gospel as part of the ‘Free Gift For All’ project. The first copy was given away on April 15, to the Mayor. In all 40,000 copies of St Luke’s Gospel were delivered to homes across Londonderry. The Centenarian saw Amelia Earhart when she landed in the field on the edge of the city and Bishop Ken Good told her that Earhart used the phone in the See House to tell the world of her achievement. Born on a farm in Ardmore, Ms McLaughlin was one of 12 children and she is having Luke’s book read to her by her niece. McLaughlin spent her early years on a farm before moving into the city. She spent many years working in Goorwich’s fashion shop and other businesses in the city. Displaying a remarkable energy she worked until about 20 years ago. At 99 years old she crossed the Peace Bridge and “thought it was lovely”.
