Central area 'gets bottom of barrel'

A CRAIGAVON man has claimed the central area's roads are not getting the same treatment as those in Lurgan.

The Drumellan man said the roads in the estate have been resurfaced twice in the past year and both times he felt the standard has left a lot to be desired.

He told the ‘MAIL’: “Last year the DRD had contractors in to resurface the streets. It wasn’t down six months and it had all to be lifted. There were stone chippings everywhere, it was a real danger for kids falling off their bikes.

He added: “They re-did it all last month and it’s the same again. Stone chippings everywhere. It’s lifting again and no one seems to care.”

The Drumellan man added: “It seems that if we live in Craigavon nobody cares what happens to our estates. I’m not joking when I say the Travellers have done better work than this.

“It goes to show where our rates are used. In Mourneview estate the work they received was first rate. We get the bottom of the barrel as far as the DRD is concerned.”

A DRD spokesperson said: “The surface treatment applied in Drumellan has been used consistently in housing estate areas across all parts of the Craigavon area for a very considerable number of years.

“Some work carried out last autumn was badly affected by the early onset of exceptionally cold conditions and Roads Service requested the contractor to return to the area this spring and carry out extensive remedial works.

“This new surface material takes a little time to bed in following which the contractor returns to site to sweep the roads as required.”
