Centre is best in Borough: councillors

The keys were handed over by Council Leisure and Amenities Committee Chairman, Alderman Frank Campbell to community representatives Frankie Cunningham and Steven Phillips at a site meeting on 27th January. Work is now in hand to get the facility up and running.

A second element of the project, on which work is ongoing, will see construction of changing facilities and pitches to IFA Intermediate League standard at the Recreation Grounds. Overall £1M is being invested in community and leisure facilities. Both elements of the project are being delivered by Castlewellan based Construction firm, Maghera Developments Limited.

Commenting of the completion of the first phase Leisure and Amenities Committee Chair, Alderman Campbell, said: “I am delighted to see the community centre coming to fruition. Improving opportunities for recreation, leisure and development of community facilities was one of the aims of the village plan, developed in consultation with the community. This modern facility will provide a venue for meetings, training days, parties, reunions, a base for club and group activity. It will offer young people the opportunity to socialise together and with other generations whilst exploring hobbies and pastimes. There are many active groups and the facility will be put to good use and improve the quality of life of citizens here.”

The community centre was funded by a grant of £247,500 by the EU North East Rural Development Programme, and contributions by Ballymoney Borough Council and Dervock & District Community Association. Despite the poor weather conditions of late the recreational element is on track. Council is meeting the cost for provision of pitches and changing facilities which will be integrated with the overall complex to further enhance the community and leisure provision in the village.
