Cereal Seed Treatment – outstanding benefits

THIS AUTUMN Joseph Morton have once again made available, the leading winter cereal varieties from the Crossnacreevy and HGCA lists.

All seed is certified by DARD for purity and germination and treated. There are different additional seed treatments available to help growers achieve top yields at least cost. Redigo Deter is a seed treatment for winter crops of barley, wheat, oats, rye and triticale. Redigo Deter gives better crop establishment and health through reduction in slug seed hollowing, wireworm damage, Fusarium and Microdochium seedling blight and stem browning. It gives 8 to 10 weeks aphid and BYDV control reducing the need for follow-up sprays. It also gives assured grain yield and quality by complete protection from seed and soil- borne bunt. Latitude seed dressing is also available to control Take-All in second year and later wheat crops.

The top performing wheat varieties in the field this year like, JB Diego, Oakley, Grafton, Humber and Duxford are all available. New to the list are Scout and Warrior. With the recent good weather some growers are keen to get on with planting. It is very early for wheat but varieties like Scout and Grafton can be planted earlier than the other varieties but ideally not before mid September. The optimum time for wheat is early October. The better varieties for second wheats are Grafton, Duxford, J B Diego and Oakley while Grafton, J B Diego and Scout have better disease resistance. On the barley list, NEW for this season is KWS Cassia, along with Saffron, Camion, Retriever and Suzuka which all performed well this harvest.

KWS Cassia represents a major advance in two row barley breeding, which will take winter barley production to the next level. A combination of extremely high yield, sound straw characteristics, good disease resistance and a very bold grain, makes KWS Cassia a reliable feed barley package. KWS Cassia joins the UK Recommended List 2010/11 as joint top yielding two-row. KWS Cassia has very similar grain characteristics to its sister variety, Saffron, which is currently the UK’s favourite feed barley on-farm.

In the six row barley varieties, Volume has been joined by Element which also has excellent yield figures. For winter Oats farmers have the choice this year of three top varieties, Mascani, Gerald and a new variety, Balado, all with good yields, standing power and kernel weights.
