Ceremony to mark Suicide Survivors’ Day

A GROUP set up to support people affected by suicide will mark World Suicide Survivors’ Day, with a ceremony in Castle Gardens next Saturday, November 19, at 6.00pm followed by refreshments in the Island Centre.

Rev. Brian Anderson from Horizons Lisburn commented: “The figures for those taking their life to suicide in 2010 were shocking – 313 people died to suicide, and then to hear that 26 of them were from the greater Lisburn area made me sit up and listen. Of those 26 the majority were male and below the age of 30. But it is not just the person who has taken their life to suicide who is affected, it reaches to many people and it is the hope the Horizons Group in Lisburn can offer support.”

He continued; “We have been going for just over one year and in a confidential way, offer practical support and give the opportunity for people to meet with others who have be affected by suicide.

“We exist to support, inform and encourage those touched by this terrible event in the greater Lisburn area and in all that we do we hope that, by raising awareness, we can help prevent a suicide.”

Mr Anderson added: “Firstly every Friday fortnight we have a drop-in at the Bridge Community Centre where, in a relaxed atmosphere, people can gather for a conversation around a cup of tea.

“Secondly we have arranged a number of social events to allow people to come together and begin to reintegrate with a small number of people. We have had Family Fun Nights, Cinema evenings, gone for short walks, and alternative therapy evenings. We also mark international days that reflect upon suicide and mental health.

The next occasion is on 19 November, Then on 11 December at 4.00 pm we will have a Tree of Lights Ceremony in the Sunken Gardens, Market Square, when your loved one will be specifically remembered on a plaque attached to a special tree.”
