Challenge for dissidents

At Monday's council meeting councillors Mairead O'Dowd and Johnny McGibbon said it was time for an explanation.

Councillor O'Dowd said: "Those responsible need to come out and explain their actions and tell us why."

Johnny McGibbon said: "I totally condemn [the bomb attack] and am thankful that no one was killed.

"But there needs to be an important point made - these people need to be challenged - is there no one who will come forward and explain why this has happened again?

"These people have no defence, no strategy and no justification for their actions. They must come forward and tell us what their strategy is.

"Because frankly they have none. They attacked their own community, the bomb was planted on a narrow street near a GAA club and close to a youth club and not far from a church. There is no defence for this.

"The community know who they are and they need to be challenged."
