Challenge Trek in the Glens

The Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) is calling all walkers to put their best foot forward and take part in the Glens of Antrim Challenge Trek on Sunday 6th May.

UCF is a local charity committed to tackling cancer by supporting cancer research, providing services for cancer patients and their families and by educating people on how they can reduce their risk of the disease.

Sarah Atcheson, UCF Events Co-ordinator, said “We are encouraging everyone to take part in this exciting event and, as there are three different walks to choose from, there is a walk to cater for all levels of ability.

“All three walks start and finish at Glenariff Forest Park with the toughest being an 18 mile hike over forest trails, roads and uneven mountain terrain. There is also a 12 mile walk over a similar, but easier route, and a 6 mile walk along main forest trails which will be guided throughout as it can be very steep in places. The routes will take in many of the fabulous local sights including the ‘Queen of the Glens’ Glenariff, spectacular waterfalls and tranquil pools.

“On arrival, you will be placed into groups according to your ability, with one guide for every 10 walkers. A booking fee of £10 secures your place and we are encouraging participants to raise a minimum of £40 for UCF. You can register now and all proceeds from the event will all go towards helping cancer patients and their families in Northern Ireland.”

“If these events aren’t challenging enough why not register for UCF’s Ben Nevis Challenge which takes place over two fun packed weekends on 22nd -24th June (an all female event with local personality, broadcaster and journalist Claire McCollum) and 14th – 16th September 2012. Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak, sits at 4,408ft / 1,344m with spectacular views over the Western Isles of Scotland. UCF’s Ben Nevis challenge can be completed by anyone of average physical ability and even if you don’t feel you are fit enough there is still plenty of time to start training.

“Alternatively you can hang up your walking boots and ‘Paddle the Bann’, taking a 36 mile trip downstream to Coleraine on 26th - 27th May 2012. On this two day canoeing event, with overnight camping, participants will be paddling for around 5 hours a day with breaks along the way. Participants should expect a strenuous and fulfilling journey, under the supervision of fully qualified staff.

“By taking part in these sponsored events you will enjoy a very rewarding personal challenge and even if you are travelling with friends you can expect to make several more during the event.”
