CHAMPIONSHIP TWO: No excuses from Taylor

In what could only be described as a lacklustre game, Wakehurst grabbed a goal eight minutes from time to seal victory.

"It was a poor game," admitted Taylor.

"We had a few half chances in the first half and just lacked any imagination in the second half to create anything."

Portstewart dominated the first half, but just couldn't break down the Wakehurst defence.

On 20 minutes Cahir Friel found James Peden, but he could only watch as his shot was saved by the home keeper.

At the other end Wakehurst were creating very few chances, Stephen Tosh dominated the Portstewart back four, as Joel Maddison had little to do in the Portstewart goal.

The second half was disappointing as the visitors created few chances despite their dominance in the first half.

In a rare raid of the Portstewart defence, Wakehurst grabbed the only goal of the game in the 82nd minute to take the points.

Taylor praised his back four of Andrew Todd, Stephen Tosh, Craig Ramsey and James Peden: "Our back four looked sharp and to be honest Joel Maddison didn't have a save to make except for the goal, which was a rebound.

"They (Wakehurst] are a well drilled side but we should have created more," admitted Taylor.

Portstewart have no game this Saturday, as they have a bye in the Co-operative Insurance Cup. Their next game is against Institute in the Craig Memorial North West Cup.

This game will be played on Saturday, August 28 at Drumahoe.

"To be honest I would like a fixture this week to keep things going, " admitted Taylor.

"But on the other hand it gives our injured players another week to work on their fitness."
