Change of venue for Halloween event

THE council is to hold this year's 'Spooked Out in Newtownabbey' Halloween events in the grounds of Mossley Mill, it has been confirmed.

The popular annual event, which has been staged at Ballyearl in recent years, will take place at the Carnmoney Road North venue on Saturday, October 30.

At their recent meeting, members of the council’s Leisure Committee were informed that the family fun event and fireworks display will take place at Mossley Mill, while a ‘Not So Scary Halloween Party’ is planned for The Courtyard Theatre at Ballyearl.

While some members raised concerns about the plan to set off fireworks so close to the wildlife around Mossley Dam, council officers say they have already taken that issue into consideration.

“Initial plans for this event have addressed the protection of the wildlife at the Mill, both in proposing either the mill roof or lower car park as the site for fireworks to be released, and specifying fireworks which do not bang or have any debris fall-out as the specific type to be used for this event,” a council spokesperson commented.

It is hoped that moving the main ‘Spooked Out’ activities to the civic square at Mossley Mill will offer residents and visitors to the borough a much-improved, high quality ‘Halloween spooktacular’.
