Changes at landfill site after residents kick up a stink

THE operator of the Baird's Brae landfill site in Mallusk has given an assurance that new odour control measures have been put in place at the facility.

Biffa Waste Services introduced the changes after local residents complained about the foul smell of rotting rubbish emanating from the waste disposal site at Cottonmount Quarry.

Several representatives from Mallusk Community Action Group (MCAG) were joined by South Antrim MP William McCrea when they met recently with Biffa officials to discuss their concerns about the unpleasant smell and other issues such as mud and debris falling off the wheels of bin lorries onto the Mallusk Road.

"You go out the door of your house and it just smells like someone has opened a bin. It's absolutely horrendous. We've actually had to complain to the Northern Ireland Environment Agency and they are now monitoring the situation.

"We've been having meetings with Biffa about these problems for about the last 14 or 16 months, but it's slow progress," MCAG Chairman, Barry Macaulay, told the Times.

Responding to the issues raised by local residents, a Biffa spokesman gave an assurance that their concerns are being addressed.
