Charges after death at police station

A PSNI sergeant and a former civilian member of staff are face charges after the death of a man at Lisburnpolice station.

They are to be charged with gross negligence manslaughter in connection with the death of the man in a cell on May 30, 2014.

Lisburn man David McGowan, 28, was arrested on the Beersbridge Road in east Belfast, after an incident.

He died hours later while in custody.

The Public Prosecution Service (PPS) confirmed in a statement on Tuesday (today) that a decision has been taken to prosecute a police officer and a former civilian detention officer in relation to the death of a man in police custody.

The charges follow an investigation by the Police Ombudsman.

In the aftermath of Mr McGowan’s death, investigators from the Police Ombudsman interviewed members of his family, witnesses to the incident and the actions of police.
