Charity book launch

LOCAL artists will come together in a book launch celebration to provide vital funding for the Southern Area Hospice Services.

The event will take place in Laurencetown Community Centre on March 11 from 8pm with music, song, poetry and a buffet supper.

The entertainment will centre on the launch of ‘Lives in a Landscape’, a debut book of verse written by Gilford woman, Anne Cairns, and edited by Peter Makem. The themes of the book are linen, lifestyles and leisure.

The poems record the history of the once vibrant linen industry that provided the livelihoods of 85 per cent of the Parish of Tullylish.

An economic and social history of the people who lived along the Bann River and the flora and fauna of the landscape is narrated. The former talents and skills of the people are celebrated through their leisure pursuits of music, handicrafts, breadmaking and dressmaking etc.

The fusion of two highly successful Co Down recording professional musicians and singers, for over 20 years, will ensure the highest genre of entertainment at the event.

Banbridge man Brendan Monaghan, whose talents on pipes, guitar, whistle, bodhran and song have taken him across Europe and America on tour with Phil Coulter. Sean Donnelly, Newcastle, is a regular on the Folk Club circuit and on radio.

The organisers invite interested patrons along to what promises to be a good evening of craic and hospitality while raising money for an important charity.
