Charity concert hits high note in Belfast

Thiepval based charity, the Army Benevolent Fund, hit all the right notes at their Waterfront Hall Somme Commemoration last weekend.

Supported by The Band of the Royal Irish Regiment and a host of other local talent, 1312 people attended, leaving donations of over £7000.

Charity Director, David Forsey said: “Lots of people travelled from Lisburn to see the show and had a great time. I’m very grateful to the people of the city.”

Newly elected Lagan Valley MLA Jenny Palmer celebrated her new office by attending the concert.

“It was a fabulous show and there was a very moving moment when the audience stood to applaud a former soldier,” said Jenny.

This occurred when Show host, UTV’s Paul Clark showcased the story of former Corporal Barney Gillespie of the RIR, who lost a leg in Afghanistan, but despite his injury, intends to climb Kilimanjaro in July, in support of the ABF.

Anyone wishing to support Barney should make a “Barney Bucket” and place it in shops, church halls, pubs and clubs to attract donations.
