Charity cycle raises whopping £12k for Cancer Focus NI

The 2012 Fun Run of the Glens (FROG) cycle ride took place through the Glens of Antrim recently and raised a record £12,632, all of which has been donated to Cancer Focus Northern Ireland - the new name for the Ulster Cancer Foundation.

FROG began in 2007, and was the concept of Glenravel man Paul McToal. Although he does not like to take the credit, Paul has raised more than £62,000 for local cancer charities to date.

He said: “It is a pleasure and a privilege to assist in the fight against cancer, and to help both those who have cancer and their families and friends who are also affected by this devastating disease.”

The event was a real challenge for both amateur and seasoned cyclists who undertook a route of either 50 miles or 100 miles across the Glens. Cyclists were rewarded at snack stops along the way and a tasty lunch at Glenravel Sports and Community complex. During the evening, sore muscles were stretched on the dance floor at a celebratory Countries of the World themed Olympic torch disco celebration.

Suzi McIlwain, community fundraiser for Cancer Focus said, “We can’t thank Paul and his team of helpers enough for all the hard work they put into organising and promoting this event. The 2012 FROG was a fundraising record-breaker which is real testament to the enthusiasm and generosity of all of the organisers, the cyclists, and their friends and family who donated to this great cause.

“Behind the scenes coffee mornings and music events were also held to support FROG so Cancer Focus are indebted to all who gave up their time to get involved.

“Cancer Focus Northern Ireland is your local cancer champion and we’re committed to tackling cancer by supporting cancer research, providing services, free-of-charge for cancer patients and their families and by educating people on how they can reduce their risk of the disease

“We rely almost entirely on the general public to allow us to continue our life enhancing work, so the £12,632 raised at FROG is very much appreciated.“
