Charity cycle to fund rare bowel cancer treatment

Chris Young and John Murray completed the 50 mile cycle last week beginning at Coleraine Town Hall.

Chris explained: “Last year my wife, Sandra, was diagnosed with a rare bowel cancer known as Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.

“It quickly spread throughout her body and there was nowhere here in Northern Ireland that could treat the cancer. She was referred to the specialist Pseudomyxoma Unit at Basingstoke Hospital which is the only place in the UK where this specific cancer can be treated.

“At Basingstoke she underwent very specialist surgery on December 20, 2011, lasting 12 hours and we spent three weeks in the hospital. She is still undergoing chemotherapy today as she continues to battle the disease.

“The work done by Basingstoke Hospital in dealing with this disease is pioneering and we are all grateful that they have given Sandra hope.”

Chris and John completed the 50 mile cycle ride to raise funds for the North Hampshire Hospital’s charity which supports the Pseudomyxoma Unit at Basingstoke Hospital.

“Whilst to many this may not seem like a local charity, it should be remembered that this is the only place in the UK that deals with this disease,” he said.
