Charity event ‘exceeded our expectations’

THE Lisburn owner of Mount Charles praised his employees for helping to raise £14,000 for the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children NICFC.

Trevor Annon said that the amount ‘exceeded all expectations’ when a team of 60 from the group packed their rucksacks and took to the Mournes in aid of the charity.

The event, which took place on The Mount Charles Group’s 24th birthday, Sunday August 12 2012, had the team work up a sweat. The funds raised will help NICFC continue their much-needed work throughout Northern Ireland. The charity not only provides emotional and financial support to families suffering from cancer but also remembers the importance of still having a childhood experience.

NICFC offer children, teenagers and young adults the opportunity to take part in fun activities such as water sports, cinema trips and schemes like the Duke of Edinburgh Award as well as offering respite retreats for families to enjoy in Shimna Valley Village and cottages near the River Bann.

Trevor said, “We were really thrilled with the turnout. Everyone completed the challenge in good spirits despite the torrential rain. The amount raised exceeded our expectations and I must thank all our staff and their family and friends who took part and some of our suppliers who supported the event and especially those who also completed the walk. This is a very worthy cause and one which touched the hearts of all.

“Having initially met with a number of charities, we felt such a strong connection to Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children and the work they do throughout Northern Ireland. The day was finished off with a much deserved BBQ at Shimna Valley allowing everyone to see the centre and some of the great work the charity does. It really inspired us to raise more and we have already started brainstorming for our next fundraising event!”

Joanna Black, Corporate Fundraiser for NICFC, said: “Every week another three children, teenagers or young adults are diagnosed with cancer in Northern Ireland making fundraising events like this extremely important.

“It is fantastic that so many from the Mount Charles Group participated in the Miles for Smiles Slieve Donard Walk. This is the organisations first large fundraising event and we are so excited to be part of it, especially since the momentum leading up the Challenge has been so positive.

“A further fundraising event will also be taking place towards the end of the year, in order to help the organisation reach their target of £25,000 by the end of December.

“The difference their efforts make to the vital services we provide to local children and young adults living with cancer and their families is massive. On behalf of NICFC we would like to say a big thank you.”
