Charity gears up for cycle challenge

LARNE'S Sandy Bay is to host a charity cycle challenge and family fun day to help raise funds for children in Malawi.

The Glens of Antrim 100km Cycle Challenge, organised by the charity Making a Difference in Malawi, will kick off from Larne Leisure Centre on Saturday, July 3.

And while the cyclists are off completing their challenge, the charity plans to organise a fundraising day for all the family at Sandy Bay.

Larne council has agreed to support the event and granted permission for the charity to erect gazebos, bouncy castles, and organise games such as penalty shootout competitions. The council has also waived the cost of hiring Sandy Bay for the event.

At a meeting of the development committee in Smiley Buildings on Monday, Councillor Gerardine Mulvenna said a similar event had taken place last year and was a great success. She added: “There was a fantastic buzz at last year’s event. It was very well supported and propose that we accept the charity’s proposal for another event this year.”

Alderman Roy Beggs said he would be happy to second Cllr Mulvenna’s proposal. He added: “It is a very worthwhile event and should attract a lot of people.”
