Charity saved the day for our Aaron

MONEY from a fundraising event at Lislagan Primary School near Ballymoney has been used to buy a wheelchair which has been presented to a charity which was able to supply a wheelchair to a local family in an emergency.

Six-year-old Aaron Bell’s mum Alana Quigg was unable to obtain a wheelchair when he was getting out of hospital in Belfast but in stepped Magherafelt-based Emergency Medical Care to save the day.

And as a thank-you to the organisation, Lislagan donated 301 to them. A further 321 raised by Aaron’s family circle has also been presented to the group.

Alana told the Times: “The hospital no longer gives out wheelchairs any more. They gave us a list of places to go in Belfast but they didn’t have any with a leg extension we needed to keep Aaron’s leg elevated.

“We were not told we could not take him out of the hospital without a wheelchair until the last moment and a nurse was able to get us in touch with Emergency Medical Care who lent us a chair free of charge.”

It can cost between 10 and 50 a week to hire a wheelchair.

Alana spoke to the Times on Friday and said Aaron was due to get out of the wheelchair this week.

She added: “We wanted to give a massive thank you to Emergency Medical Care. We would have been lost without a wheelchair and Aaron would not have been able to get to school and we would have had to get home tutoring put in place.

“We would like to thank everybody who supported us including local businesses like Buds N Bows,” said Alana.
