Cheers for Foster at Galgorm Castle

AT the halfway point in the Mivan Ltd-sponsored Stableford played at Galgorm Castle Golf Club Lyle Foster (9) was one point ahead of Jonathan McCart (16), Philip Smyth (12) and David Stirling jnr (10) followed by Gavin Rodgers (9) and Alan Speers (12) another point behind.

With three holes left to play McCart had joined Foster in the lead with Stirling jnr a point behind.

Smyth was another point down with Rodgers and Speers two points adrift.

Foster finished par, par, bogey for Overall victory with McCart (bogey, double bogey, par) runner-up. Rodgers came with a late run of par, par, birdie to finish level with Smyth (par, bogey, par) and with a better back nine Rodgers took first place in Division 1 with Smyth second.

Stirling jnr (three bogeys) slipped over the closing holes but held on for third place, one point ahead of Speers (par, bogey, par).

In Division 2 at the mid-point Kenny Andrews (16) was one point ahead of Denis McCarroll (15) who was another three points ahead of Philip Galloway (13). Close on his heels one point away came Pat McDonald (13) and Willard Simpson (15).

Through 13 McCarroll had moved into a two point advantage and with two to play McCarroll maintained his two point lead over McDonald and it now appeared to be between these two players for first and second places.

Andrews and a revived Galloway (par, par, birdie) were four points further away with Simpson ('ding', at 16) another two points behind. McCarroll finished double bogey, bogey to win comfortably by four points from McDonald ('ding', bogey) with Andrews (double bogey, par) third one point behind McDonald. Galloway (two bogeys) and Simpson (bogey, par) finished level one point out of the placings.

Division 3 saw 20- handicapper Mervyn Lamont leading at the turn by one point from Noel Alynn (20) with Ian Rosborough (18) another point away with Sam MacDonald (20) four further points behind.

Over the closing two holes the placings were all to play for and McAlynn (double bogey, bogey), Rosborough (two bogeys) and MacDonald (two bogeys) all finished together. With a better back nine MacDonald took second place with Rosborough (better back nine) in third.

Phil Hanlon (8) had a good day and won the Gross prize. His round included 4 birdies and 9 pars. James Mairs (11) won the Seniors.

LADIES AND GENTS' OPEN STABLEFORD

In the above competition Robbie Sutherland playiny off 10 was the overall winner by two points from Philip Galloway (13) (bb9). But for a 'ding' on 11 Galloway would have at least finished closer to the winner. The same could apply to Mervyn Lamont (17) ('ding' on 13) who finished in third. Colin Steel (5) was a point behind in fourth place.

The gross was won by Dermot McElroy (-2) (Ballymena) (bb1) and the Ladies prize went to C.Robinson (25) (Belvoir Park).

NU-TRAK STABLEFORD

At the halfway mark in the Nu-Track sponsored Stableford, Garrett Bell (5) was two point ahead of John Hunt (13) with Jonathan McCart (14) and Colin Kinghan (2) at one point intervals respectively behind.

After 16 and with two holes to play the leadership had changed with McCart taking a one point lead over Bell.

McCart (two bogeys) held on over the closing two holes to win by one point from Bell (par, bogey) in the runner-up position. Kinghan (par, birdie) closed up to finish level with Hunt (two bogeys). Kinghan won the gross prize and Hunt won the Seniors.

In Division 1 at the turn Stephen Logan (7) was ahead of Gary Boyd (11) by one point. Gary Henry (4) and Liam Reilly jnr (1) were another point away with Stephen Penney (3) a further two points down.

Through 13 Boyd and Henry had overtaken Logan with Boyd one point ahead of Henry and Logan another point behind along with an improving Penney.

After 16 Boyd had increased his lead to two points over Henry and finished with two bogeys to win by one point from a closing G Henry (two pars) and S Logan (bogey, birdie) and with a better back nine Henry came home in second place with Logan third.

In Division 2 Scott Johnston (15) was one point ahead of Gordon Allen (15) and Harkness McCaughan (17) and another point ahead of John Paul McGeough (17). Johnston was still one point ahead of Allen with two to play and he finished par, double bogey to hold off the challenge of his pursuers. Allen (par, double bogey) finished one point behind in second with third place going to McCaughan (two bogeys).

Geoffrey Adams (20) led Cyril Reid (25) by one point at halfway in Division 3 with Aidan Donnelly (18) and Bernie Frayne (19) pushing them hard another point away.

After 16 Reid (fourth ‘ding’) Donnelly and Adams (‘ding’) were level, two points clear of Frayne. Reid finished with two bogeys to win by one point from an ever closing Frayne (two pars) who finished level with Donnelly (double bogey, par) and Adams (double bogey, par) and with a better back six Donnelly finished in second position with Frayne (better back nine) third.
