Chemistry Olympiad success for Dominican pair

Of the 3,500 entrants nationwide, upper sixth Chemistry pupils Chris Black and Stephen Ramsay’s scores placed them in the top 10% of the most able Chemistry students in the UK.

Chris’s score puts him in the top 250 entrants and Stephen was just one mark short of the gold award himself.

Chemistry teacher, Miss Libby Thompson, explained how, in her first year in the school, she quickly realised the “natural aptitude” of both boys for their subject and encouraged them to help in the setting up of a junior Science Club in the school.

“Their obvious love for the subject encouraged her to enter them in the Annual International Chemistry Olymics, organised by The Royal Society.”

Miss Thompson and principal, Dr Cummings, commended the enthusiasm and dedication of both boys in taking part and excelling in this very prestigious event, the first pupils in the school to have done so.

Chris and Stephen are currently studying for their A level exams and have received offers to study Medicine next year. Chris hopes to go to Cambridge and Stephen to Queen’s University, Belfast.
