Cheque-point duties for Philip as he goes back to school

BALLYMENA soldier Phillip Gillespie returned to his old school last week to take delivery of a special cheque for his Regiment’s Benevolent Fund.

Philip’s visit to Cullybackey High School also saw him give a talk to the senior pupils on his army experiences.

Former pupil Philip joined the Royal Irish Regiment after leaving school and was the ‘best recruit’ when he passed out of initial training.

He was then promoted to Lance Corporal and Corporal in very short time. Philip served 3 tours in Afghanistan in 2006, 2008 and 2010. In his last tour Philip was badly injured and is now a lower limb amputee.

The pupils were very interested in his very personal story and were most impressed by his very positive attitude to his time in the army and now in his plans for a new career.

A true man of action Philip is now preparing to take part in challenging international car rallies and is a co-driver in the ‘Race 2 Recovery’ rally team.

Cullybackey High School staff and pupils are proud to be associated with Philip and wish him well for the future.

The school presented a cheque for £750 to Philip on behalf of 1st Battalion, Royal Irish as a result of a non uniform day earlier this term.
