Chernobyl appeal for local host families

The local branch of the Chernobyl Children’s Appeal NI Ltd is appealing for host families to help more children benefit from a stay in Northern Ireland.

The organisation’s Director Angela Carruthers told The Times: “We’re always looking for more families-our only limit to the number of children we can take is the number of host families.

“For every one of the children here now there are ten others who didn’t get to come.”

Larne group Co-ordinator John McDermott, from Carrickfergus, said that the benefits of hosting a child are immense. He explained: “We are a family of four and our boys are married and away. The benefit is bringing children into the house, filling it with laughter and having a good time. The children become one of the family, which is why it is so heart breaking when they leave .
