Chicken soup and songs for the soul

As part of Community Relations events in the coming week, Towards Understanding and Healing, supported by Derry City Council, has organised a Chicken Soup and Songs for the Soul event, which will be held in the Church Hall, beside St Augustine’s Church.

It will take place from 12.30pm on Friday, May 18.

This free event brings together two special guest singers and speakers : local singer- songwriter , community arts and community development worker, Roy Arbuckle, alongside Anne Tracey, author and lecturer in the School of Psychology at the Magee Campus of the University of Ulster. Roy is the founding father of the Different Drums of Ireland project which has graced stages from Londonderry to the Royal Festival hall in London and onwards to the White House during the Presidency of Bill Clinton.

Waterside resident, Anne Tracey returned to education as a mature student when she studied psychology. Anne believes in the crucial importance of taking care of the self in order to maintain mental health and well-being.

At this event both Anne and Roy will be sharing something of their own life experiences, how they have dealt with the ups and downs and how song and music has nourished their souls along the way.

“The songs are intended as a catalyst for those present to share what they may wish to share of their story, in as much or as little detail as they feel comfortable with,” said Roy.

“Given the current development of the Junction site, Towards Understanding and Healing is grateful to the Reverent Pat Storey, Hazel Philson and Dickie Montgomery of St Augustine’s Church who have facilitated our use of their church hall premises on Palace Street, just off Society Street, for this unique event. We are also grateful to Derry City Council for their financial support. Chicken and vegetable soup will be served prior to this event,” said Eamonn Baker, representing Towards Understanding and Healing.
