Chief Constable addresses clergy

Thirty-three clergy, representing the city’s spread of religious denominations, gathered at the Whitehorse hotel on Tuesday 27th February.

For quite some time it has been felt there should be a bespoke opportunity for clergy to meet, with no agenda other than to allow friendly clerical relationships to evolve.

Busy schedules all too frequently militate against any meaningful interaction amongst the city’s religious leaders. Yet, if ever people are to move closer together so as to become friendly allies and not warring adversaries, positive leadership will be required. Clergy, it has to be said, are probably better placed than most throughout the city and beyond to enable people from both the unionist/loyalist and nationalist/republican communities to step outside their respective comfort zones and start moving in the direction of each other. Indeed, herein resides the building blocks for a better shared future for everyone! ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth’ world can become, with Almighty God’s help, ‘the lion lying down with the lamb’ world.
