Mr Liam Hannaway spoke to the Leader, reflecting on his time in Banbridge before he embarks on his new Chief Executive post at the soon to be established Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, next month.

Seven years ago when he accepted the role of Chief Executive in Banbridge, he pledged to work with a string of stakeholders at local and regional level to put the district on the map - a vision he feels he achieved.

His first major task was to oversee the delivery of a £9m plus capital investment programme that would put the district on a par with other areas in terms of facilities.

Projects such as the Gilford Community Centre (£2.4m), F.E. McWilliam Gallery and Studio (£2.2m), Banbridge Community Recycling Centre (£1.7m) and Solitude Park (£1.75m) to name but a few improvements that have been made to ensure the future needs of the district’s growing population are being met.

Speaking about his time at Banbridge Mr Hannaway said: “It has been an absolute privilege to work with, as well as lead a very hardworking, loyal, committed and professional team at Banbridge District Council.

“I am immensely proud of what we as an organisation have achieved during my time there. The decision to leave this progressive and forward-thinking organisation has been very difficult.

“However, I feel the time is right for me to take up a new challenge. I have done much soul-searching but leading a new council, which takes in my home area, is a wonderful opportunity for me.

“Nevertheless, the culture of Banbridge District Council is strong and will prevail into the new organisation. As the neighbouring chief executive, I will always be an advocate for the Banbridge District in the new council.”

Mr Hannaway, who lives in Lislea, has built upon the council’s reputation in many areas including waste management, recycling, leisure and economic development.

A council spokesperson said that under his direction, the focus had always been on making sure high quality services are delivered cost-effectively and facilities are run as efficiently as possible.

“He has been instrumental in developing a culture of continuous improvement across all council departments as is evident through the many awards amassed in recent years,” said the spokesperson.

“Thanks to his determination and hard work, the council has become more community-focused, citizen-centred and performance-orientated. Mr Hannaway’s background in economic development has made him steely in his determination to see the district grow and prosper.

“Particularly notable is the level of investment that has been ploughed into the district’s towns through urban regeneration schemes such as public realm works, shop front improvements, public art installations and community gardens.”

Council Chairman Councillor Olive Mercer commented: “We, both councillors and staff, are all very proud of Liam’s legacy and wish him every success in his new role.

“He has been a good friend and colleague to us all over the years. He is held in such high regard and it’s sad to see him go after 14 years of service – first as Director of Development and then Chief Executive.

“However, we are delighted that he has secured a position as Chief Executive in the new Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

“He has done a sterling job in serving this council and local people well over the years. He’s a real asset to any organisation and I know he will excel in his new role.”

Mr. Pat Cumiskey currently Director of Corporate Services, will succeed Liam as Chief Executive from next month. Pat will hold this post until March 31 2015 when Roger Wilson will take over the reins as the Chief Executive of the newly merged Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon District Council.
