Students dressed as their favourite book characters and they were given 45 minutes to create the best bookmark they could think of. It was amazing to see the creativity of the children, who produced a wonderful, colourful display in 2D and 3D. There were two age categories: four to seven-year-olds and eight to 11-year-olds.

Parents were asked to vote for the best two bookmarks in each category, and prizes were distributed.

During the event surprise visitor, Niamh Fahy, artist and an illustrator, popped in and spoke to children about the various ways that a story can be illustrated, her favourite books, authors and illustrators, and she engaged the children in a ‘doodle activity’ game. She also spoke to the parents about The Humdinger Children’s Festival, later this month and urged parents to attend with their children.

What is the Humdinger! Children’s Festival?

Humdinger! celebrates words, stories and imagination and features some of the biggest and best-loved names in children’s books.

When is it happening?

The festival will take place from March 24 to 29, bringing incredible artists and fabulous stories to the little bookworms of our city.

What’s it all about?

The programme showcases fun, family-friendly, innovative events over six days, in a range of venues in Londonderry - and children will have a chance to meet their favourite authors and illustrators, listen to stories!
