Children get creative for Fairtrade

Primary and secondary pupils across the district flexed their creative skills as Banbridge Fairtrade Steering Committee launched a competition which was open to local primary and secondary school students.

The competition was launched as a celebration for Fairtrade fortnight.

Members of the Committee gave talks and presentations in each of the participating schools outlining Fairtrade aims and objectives and explaining how individuals can support Fairtrade in their everyday lives.

The primary school students had to design a front cover for a new Fairtrade shopping directory, whilst the secondary school students were challenged to write a poem for the directory. The directory details the shops in Banbridge District which supply or support Fairtrade.

The members of Banbridge Fairtrade Steering Committee recently judged the entries and were amazed by the amount received and the high standard from all the participating schools.

The winner of the primary school section was Joshua Grant from Gilford Primary school; his design will become the front cover of the directory. The runners up were Anna Rice, St Colman’s Primary School, Dromore and Ellie Wright, Edenderry Primary School. The winners of the secondary school poetry competition were James Toal, Rathfriland High School and Sophie Howard, Dromore High School. The Banbridge Fairtrade Steering Committee would like to thank all who participated.
