Children speak out about environmental issues

Environmental Youth Speak, now in its 14th year is an annual public speaking competition open to pupils throughout Northern Ireland.

This competition encourages environmental awareness among young people by giving them opportunity to research and debate environmental issues.

Participation also enables pupils to improve their communication skills, develop self confidence and articulate reasoned arguments based on environmental facts.

The two categories this year on which pupils had to base their speech on: –

Junior Section (P6 & P7 pupils)

Shrink your bin – one less bag to landfill

Senior Section (For Yr8 and Y9 pupils)

WEEE* Waste – Big Problem. What can we do?

Moyle District Council held their local heats recently and all participating pupils enjoyed their involvement and delivered their speeches brilliantly.

The winner from the senior section was Lara McGarry from Cross and Passion College and the winner from the junior section was Eve Gairnéir from Gael Scoil an Chaistil.

Congratulations to all the children taking part and best wishes to the two winners who will now go onto represent Moyle District Council in the regional final and Northern Ireland Final which will take place on 26th April 2012 at Mossley Mill, Newtownabbey. Thanks to Shorna Meggitt Adjudicator, from Ballycastle School of Speech and Drama and Councillor Paudraig McShane, Chairman, Moyle District Council for distributing the certificates and goodie bags.
