Choir marathon smashes target

DROMORE Cathedral Choir’s recent hymn-singing marathon boosted its beneficiary to the tune of £2,400, two-and-a-half times the target set by organist Gordon Myers.

It’s no surprise that, having ended on an even higher note than expected, the marathon - to raise funds for the Partnership Project between the Cathedral and the Southern Sudan Diocese of Maridi – was hailed a great success. Gordon and the choir kicked off the event at noon on the day, with Ross Morrow, Carl McCambley, Gertie Jameson and Trevor Crowe providing key support at the organ and additional backing coming from members of the congregation, former Cathedral choristers and visitors from other choirs.

Information on the Partnership Project and the Diocese of Maridi was on display and refreshments were provided by the Choir and members’ families.

In the run-up to the event the Cathedral congregation had been voting for their favourite hymns and worship songs, donating £1 for each vote, and the hymns and songs were then sung in reverse order.

Some 100 hymns and songs later the No.1 hymn ‘Great is Thy Faithfulness’ was sung.

The Cathedral Project Group is now talking with its counterpoint in Maridi to see how best to use the money raised.

Gordon and the Cathedral Choir thank all those who contributed to the event in any way.
