Chorister success

FOUR members of Hillsborough Parish Choir made their recording debuts earlier this year and their CD is proving quite a hit. And that’s good news not only for the singers, but for a local charity too.

In their spare time, sopranos Michele Hutchinson, Penny Scott and Gillian Burns, and tenor Derek Gallop, are all members of Cadenza, a chamber choir directed by Michael McCracken, organist and musical director at Down Cathedral.

In January, Cadenza launched ‘Nearer, My God to Thee’, a 22-track CD of popular hymns, recorded in the Cathedral over two weeks.

The disc is dedicated to alto Jean Christie, a member of Cadenza from Banbridge, who sadly died last year. Some of the proceeds from the sale of the CD, and from the choir’s two Christmas concerts – one of which was held in Hillsborough Parish Church – are being donated to Macmillan Cancer Support NI, whose nurses and carers did so much for Jean in the last few months of her life.

Tracks from the CD have featured regularly on Sounds Sacred, BBC Radio Ulster’s religious request programme, which is broadcast each Sunday.

As a result, copies are being snapped up all over Northern Ireland.

The choir plan to make a presentation to a Macmillan representative after their performance of the Duruflé Requiem in Down Cathedral on Monday (March 25) at 8pm

If you would like a copy of the CD, please contact Derek Gallop on 92 661953. Cadenza, and Macmillan would be very grateful for your support.
