Christmas Fair raises vital funds for charity

THE 2011 Christmas Charity Fair which recently took place in Hillsborough Courthouse was a success with over £500 being raised by the charities for their causes.

Over 500 people attended this annual event that was organised by the Council’s Tourist Information Centre staff. The charities in attendance were British Heart Foundation, NI Hospice, War on Want, Cancer Research, Women’s Institute, Calcutta and Huntington’s Charity.

Alderman William Leathem, Deputy Mayor of Lisburn, who attended the event, said: “This was a well turned out event with a delightfully seasonal atmosphere. I would like to thank the Northern Ireland Environment Agency for their very kind contribution of the Community Room at the Market House for use by the Fair. The charities present at the event sold Christmas cards and a variety of gifts; and the children who attended were treated to complimentary face painting and balloon models.”

“Pupils from Downshire Primary School performed Christmas Carols to get everyone in the Christmas spirit in time for Santa’s arrival. Five local primary schools - Downshire, Anahilt, Meadowbridge, Brookefield and Beechlawn – took part in the annual competition to design a Christmas card.

“Each card was exceptionally well designed and I understand that the judges had a very difficult decision to make when selecting the winners. May I conclude by saying congratulations and thank you to every child who entered the competition.”

The Deputy Mayor of Lisburn, Alderman William Leathem presented the prizes to the winners of the Schools Christmas Card Competition. Each winner received a voucher to spend in either the Hillsborough or Lisburn Tourist Information Centre.
