Christopher takes senior speak title

Christopher Corry from Lismore Comprehensive scooped the top title after 21 pupils took part in the competition at Craigavon Civic Centre.

The Senior Section, which was open to year eight, nine and ten pupils, tackled the subject ‘The True Cost of Waste’ while the Junior speakers from primary six and seven spoke on ‘My Waste’s Got

Talent: What Can It Become?’

All pupils had to speak for up to five minutes on their topic with three judges from the council keeping score. Rebecca Humphreys from Hart Memorial Primary School took the junior honour.

“My congratulations goes out not only to Rebecca and Christopher who won their categories, but to every single pupil who took part in the competition as speaking in public can be a very nerve wracking experience,” commented Councillor Mark Baxter, a member of the council’s environmental services committee.

“All the presentations were very well researched and extremely impressive – we were all left thinking about our environment and what we can do to help its survival. It is great to know that our young people are so tuned into these extremely important subjects and gives us hope for our environmental future.”

All participants received a certificate of participation and a green bag of goodies.

Rebecca and Christopher will now take part in the regional final and if they get through that will compete in the prestigious NI final which will be taking place in Limavady in March.
