Church-based debt charity backed by MLAs

Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is a UK-based international charity dedicated to helping people reclaim their lives from the curse of debt. It has been reported that twice as many families in Northern Ireland experience poverty than in the rest of the UK, and according to CAP, 40 per cent of the people they have helped had considered or even attempted suicide before coming to them for help.

At Carnmoney Presbyterian Church, CAP Centre Manager Brian Givans and his team are trained to help everyone struggling to deal with debt - regardless of their religion or beliefs. Already the CAP team has helped dozens of families across Newtownabbey and north Belfast who have been finding life tough during the current economic downturn.

“I have great affection for this organisation because they tackle this sensitive issue with a light touch. In these awful economic times a small missed payment or a stroke of bad fortune can spiral to become a source of enormous anxiety,” Mr Kinahan commented.
