Church explains loan request

Shankill Parish have explained their decision to ask parishioners for interest-free loans.

The church told the ‘MAIL’: “The Vestry has been reviewing the finances of the church to try to eliminate a projected deficit over the next few years.

“The church currently pays approximately £5,000 in bank interest each year and this is likely to rise.

“This interest could be reduced if parishioners were willing to lend money to the church on an interest-free basis.

“The loan will be repaid upon request.”

One parishioner had contacted the ‘MAIL’ to criticise the move saying Shankill Parish were ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’. “The problem is not being resolved, simply put off,” they said.
