Church in Market Place set to launch in Larne

Larne congregations are partnering with Larne community development project to promote local services and encourage local commerce.

The pilot Church in the Market Place scheme, which will run from February to Easter, seeks to provide a local information point, promote local events and activities and support a venue for demonstrations including arts, crafts and cookery.

The initiative, which will take place at Larne Market Auction House on Wednesday mornings from 10am-12pm, also seeks to offer support and friendship by becoming an additional access point for other support agencies.

Minister of First Larne Presbyterian Colin McClure said that the programme would be a practical demonstration of local churches working together and taking a civic lead in promoting local services and encouraging local commerce.

The eight-week programme begins on February 4. As well as a presence in the market during the mornings, there will be evening activities beginning with a series of history talks led by Liam Kelly and Rev John Nelson. The first talk on local street names will encourage awareness of the town and its history. The meeting will start at 7.30pm in the Auction House.

The project is supported by the Irish Churches Peace Project through funding from the Special European Union Programmes Body Peace 3 programme and the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government. For information contact Deborah Neill on 02828267976.
