Church man saddened by oil theft

A CHURCH of Ireland clergyman in Ballycastle has spoken of his sadness that oil thieves targeted church property.

Rev David Ferguson was reacting to the theft of around 200 litres of oil from a tank at Holy Trinity Church in the centre of the town on March 28.

“It is very disappointing this has happened and that people feel they have to do something like this,” said Rev. Ferguson.

A pipe was damaged at the oil tank which provides heat for the church hall and Trinity Cottage but Rev. Ferguson said the actual Holy Trinity Church is heated from another tank.

He said it is not the first time the Church of Ireland congregation suffered at the hands of thieves as oil had previously been stolen from St James’ Church at Ramoan.

One local man said: “To steal oil from any place is bad but from the grounds of a church is particularly despicable.”

Police are appealing for information on 08456008000 or phone the Crimestoppers freephone number on 0800555111.
